Reading the Facebook comments regarding Elementary’s decision to cast Lucy Liu was quite possibly the worst decision I have made all week.

GIVE IT A GODDAMN CHANCE BEFORE YOU FUCKING BLAME US AMERICANS (WHICH PROBABLY INCLUDES YOU BY THE WAY) FOR RUINING SOMETHING THAT HAS BEEN REINTERPRETED THROUGHOUT THE LAST FEW CENTURIES GODDAMN

You know why?

It’s my goddamn right. And I am an American. And I think it’s a fucking RETARDED IDEA. I know American television. It takes a formula, it runs it into the ground, and keeps beating it. Look at everything you already know about this show and fit it into a typical cop drama… yeah, yeah it lines up pretty well!

I’m not bringing ACD into this. I’m not bringing anyone but you and me into this. It’s stupid, it’s going to turn a powerful character who is on equal footing with the main character into a stereotypical American-woman-on-television character who is a step below the main character, it’s going to remove a lovely undercurrent theme and force it into the foreground, it’s RUINING WATSON’S CHARACTER (hi, she’s a surgeon who had her license revoked after a patient died and does CONSULTING WORK WITH THE NYPD. WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN?).

You know what she’s going to do? She’s going to keep Watson’s promiscuity (because an independent/forward-thinking/feminist woman in American television has sex with a bunch of people she doesn’t know!) and get rid of the gambling habits because gambling addiction is still just a joke in American TV. She’s going to be “hot-headed”. She’s going to have a tough exterior, but be weak internally, and rush into everything without thinking.

She’s going to know martial arts just because she’s Asian!

I had hopes for Elementary. I did. I was expecting it to be entertaining and at least kind of funny. But it’s going to be like every other fucking show on television.

But how do you fucking know?! Honestly! Why would you judge something before it’s even a thing? Yeah, I understand there’s a lot of shit American television, but you know what? There’s a lot of shit television in Canada. There’s a lot of shit television in Asia. Believe it or not, the UK has a lot of shit television too! It’s not just a “stupid American” thing! Y’know, just like there’s been a lot of bad shows, there’s also been a lot of good ones. Big Bang Theory? The Walking Dead (which I haven’t actually watched a lot of but the comics, WRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN NO LESS, were pretty good)? Syfy always has something interesting, if not necessarily “good.”

Basically what I’m trying to say is don’t count your chickens before they hatch, and don’t make blanket judgements about a huge, broad subject.
